Chandigarh : Punjab Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Khaira today asked the government to remove Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini from his post over the "fake encounter" of two Dalit boys in Jamalpur recently.

In a statement, he alleged the "killings are a fallout of the Badal government's policy to promote and honour policemen for extra-judicial killings. It appears the Badals, once vocal critics of stage-managed encounters by the Punjab Police, have done a turnaround and are now promoting and shielding those responsible for these extra-judicial killings.”

He said the killings could be a part of a larger conspiracy to eliminate opponents.

“Let them remove Saini as DGP. In today’s world, no sane person can justify such killings, even in the name of fighting terrorism. We have an appropriate criminal justice system under the Constitution,” Khaira said.

The Congress leader said while some policemen had been given promotions out of the way, others had been awarded with important positions post-retirement.

Let them remove Saini as DGP. In today's world, no sane person can justify such killings, even in the name of fighting terrorism. We have an appropriate criminal justice system under the Constitution-—Sukhpal Khaira, PPCC Spokesman
