CHANDIGARH: Lashing out at the alleged indifference of the state government to the future of 120 medical students, who have been protesting outside Government Medical College, Amritsar, leader of opposition Sunil Jakhar on Monday demanded immediate relief to the students and their parents.

Jakhar said the Medical Council of India had cancelled the recognition of the private college, where the students had taken admission in 2011, owing to shortage of staff and other facilities. He said the future of these students was at stake and they had been protesting for the past many days.

Jakhar demanded that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal intervene and resolve the issue, so that the precious time of the students could be saved and the harassment to the parents could be stopped. He demanded that the university and the state government should arrange for the students’ examination to be held next month.

Earlier, the parents and students had met Jakhar, alleging that owing to political compulsion, the state government was not doing anything. Jakhar assured the students of all help.
