CHANDIGARH: Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday ridiculed the Punjab government’s claims that low demand was the reason for the closure of various power plants in the state.

In a statement issue here, Amarinder said, “Villages across the state are subjected to long-duration power cuts and the same is the case with the industry.” He said if there was really low demand for power, why were villages and the industry being subjected to regular cuts.

The former Punjab chief minister said the fact was that the state was short of coal as it had failed to ensure and guarantee regular and adequate coal supply to the power plants.

The senior Congress leader said he had been maintaining that there was no point in setting up power plants as long as there was no guaranteed and uninterrupted coal supply.
