Jalandhar : The change of guard with Modi government at the Centre has left Jalandhar Member of Parliament (MP) Chaudhary Santokh Singh concerned over the ‘popularity’ and ‘benefit’ of the previous UPA led Congress government sponsored schemes.

Chaudhary Santokh, who chaired the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting in Jalandhar on Monday, expressed deep concern over the status of the centre sponsored schemes, which were launched with much fanfare by the UPA-I and II government consecutively.

The MP, who was a senior Congress leader ensured that an awareness drive cum promotion of the centre sponsored schemes launched by the Congress government like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), Right to Education Act (RTE), Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojna, Indira Awas Yojna to name a few.

Addressing the vigilance monitoring committee meeting, the MP specifically said that many states in the country have done exceptionally well in implementing MNREGA. The MP said that people want to avail work under MNREGA but in Punjab, the implementation of this scheme has not been good. “Considering the nature of work, some new jobs should be added under the MNREGA in the state. The officials should ensure that at least five or six such works were included, which would help promote the scheme while special awareness camps should also be held to publicise it”, he said.

Even discussing about the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojna, the MP urged the PSPCL officials to highlight the scheme, which was meant to provide free electricity to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the district. “I would ensure that besides the SC/BC families, free power was also provided to the BPL families under this scheme”, he added.

Similarly, while talking about current status of Indira Awas Yojna, Chaudhary Santokh said, “I have learnt that the Modi government was renaming this scheme. I was also part of a meeting, which was held in this regard.”
