CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress on Friday took a dig at the Badals over the state government’s U-turn on the announcement of withdrawing the state cops’ security cover to ex-MP Navjot Sidhu of the BJP.

“The Badals are cleverly following the carrot-and-stick policy to either intimidate and coerce its political opponents into subjugation, or appease its friends and allies in the allocation of security,” Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Khaira said in a statement here.

He said Sidhu’s security had been withdrawn for his strong outbursts against the Badals, accusing them of backstabbing the BJP in Haryana. He dubbed the security episode “a wellthought-out strategy to which the Punjab Police has become a convenient tool”.

“The drama has once again brought to centre-stage the issue of partisan, unfair and politically motivated allocation of security personnel in Punjab. It only indicates that there are no criteria, guidelines or a laid-down policy in allocating security, it is only the whims and fancies of the Badal duo that do the trick,” Khaira said.

Also taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party, Khaira asked why the BJP remained a mute spectator for the past seven years to the “atrocities and political vendetta unleashed by their government in Punjab against the ordinary people and opposition parties?”
