Akali leader Galib dead

Ludhiana : Senior Akali leader and former Member of Parliament Gurcharan Singh Galib (82) passed away after a brief illness on Saturday morning.

Galib was undergoing treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital for the last one week and it was around 7 am that he breathed his last. After his sudden demise, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal visited his house in Barewal area. The CM termed Galib as a balanced and an experienced leader, who was a true champion of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat. Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, Badal prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength and courage to the family members, relatives and friends to bear this irreparable loss.

Two times Member of Parliament from Ludhiana Galib joined Shiromani Akali Dal in 2009 and contested Lok Sabha elections but he was defeated from Congress candidate Manish Tewari. Native of village Galib Kalan of Ludhiana district Galib was born on December 1, 1932. He did his BA from SCD Government College, Ludhiana.

While starting his political carrier Galib became President, Panchayat Samiti, Sidhwan Bet in 1964, and in 1967, he was elected as an MLA from Jagraon constituency. In 1990, he became President, District Congress Committee Ludhiana and in year 1992 and 1999, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ludhiana on a Congress ticket.

At present he was the vice president and member of Political Affairs Committee of Shiromani Akali Dal.

He is survived by wife Amarjeet Kaur, son Karanjit Singh Galib, three daughters- Manjeeta Kaur, Karamjit Kaur and Gurpreet Kaur. His cremation would take place at his ancestral Galib Kalan village at noon on Sunday.
