AJNALA ( AMRITSAR): Deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Capt Amarinder Singh, on Monday rubbished the antinarcotic drive of the Badal government as a non-serious effort and assured the people of Punjab that he will take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament.

“This campaign of the government is not leading us anywhere and nor any permanent solutions been found. If we want to save our future generation we need a permanent solution,” he said in response to complaints by residents of Ghonewal village who had come to meet him during his tour of the villages along the Ravi which flows close to the border with Pakistan in the Ajnala subdivision of Amritsar district.

Later in his address to a gathering at the adjoining village of Machiwala, the MP from Amritsar said he will bring forth the non-serious approach of the Badal government towards the drug menace before the Prime Minister. He said that drugs were one of the major issues that the Congress had focused on during the last Lok Sabha polls.

“I will highlight this issue in Parliament during the winter session. It will be done when the PM himself is present in the Lok Sabha as he too is aware of the seriousness of the problem, but is unaware of the approach of the (Punjab) government”, he said.

He claimed that during the government’s campaign against drugs that commenced after the Lok Sabha polls, only small-time pedlars and addicts had been arrested. The big fish were either not touched or simply let off, he alleged while referring to the recent seizures of heroin from the Kalanaur areas of adjoining Gurdaspur district.
