Chandigarh : Former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today accused the Modi government of insulting the 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims by retracting on its commitment to give Rs 5 lakh to each of the affected families.

She said after a show-cause notice was issued to the BJP by the Election Commission of India on its announcement in this regard, the party had taken a U-turn. It had told the Election Commission that it had not made any such announcement.

Bhattal called this a cruel joke on the riot victims.

“The BJP should apologise to the victims. As announced, the party should award compensation to the affected families on a priority basis,” she said.

“Justice for the families too should be ensured. There is a need to restore the victims' faith in the administration and this can be done by providing them justice,” Bhattal added.
