Sangrur : Congress workers blocked the Sangrur-Patiala road at Bhawanigarh for an hour and raised slogans against the government today. They were protesting against non-payment of farmers’ dues for the paddy procured by government agencies.
The protesters were led by state vice-president of the Congress and former MLA Surinderpal Singh Sibia. Sibia said the state government’s claim that payment would be made to the farmers within 72 hours of procuring paddy from them had proved false. Arhtiyas and farmers had been waiting for their payments for the past 15 days. He also lashed out at the Modi government for delay in payment to farmers.
Among others who spoke on the occasion was state vice-president of Congress Kisan Cell Ranjit Singh Toor.
