Chandigarh : Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh today asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to own moral responsibility for failure in ensuring timely payment to famers for their paddy crop. He said, both the state and the Centre must find a way out and not make the farmers suffer for no fault of theirs.

The Congress leader blamed the state government for failing to furnish the accounts to qualify for the next installment of funds. He said no payment had been made to farmers since October 22. Thousands of quintals of paddy had been procured without any payment till date.

In a statement, Amarinder Singh said: “Badal cannot shrug off responsibility by putting the blame on the Centre. He said he had been time and again warned the state government to set its house in order.

He maintained that the Union Finance Ministry was well within its right to ask the state government to give an account of the money spent by it. “This reflects the financial mismanagement that has become characteristic of the Akali government,” he observed, adding the Akalis were known for misusing and divert funds.

Referring to reports on diversion of funds meant for the welfare of Dalits, he said: “I have been time and again cautioning you against splurging funds during your Sangat Darshan pastime. This is what happens when you don’t listen to sane advice.”
