GURDASPUR: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Partap Singh Bajwa on Friday launched party’s ‘Punjab Bachao Muhim’ (Save Punjab Campaign) to make Punjab dugs free at his home town Qadian in Gurdaspur district.
Addressing a gathering, Bajwa said besides being a national political party, the Congress was also functioning as a social service organisation in the larger interest of the country.
He said unfortunately the youth of Punjab, which is land of gurus, saints and prophets, were becoming victims to drug abuse. He said if the practice went on for sometime more, the youth of Punjab and the future of the state would be ruined completely.
He said the campaign against the menace of drug abuse had not been launched to get any political mileage, but to save the youth from falling victims to drug addiction. He said Congress felt the need to save the youth from the curse of the consumption of narcotics.
In the beginning, he said, the campaign was being launched at five places such as Qadian, Majitha, Chabbewal, Sanour and Ludhiana (western) and later it would be extended to all the 117 assembly segments of Punjab.
He said under the campaign, committees would be formed at the local level across the state to make people aware of the ill effects of drug addiction. Bajwa said it was the duty of all Punjabis to make the drive against drug abuse a success.
Speaking on the occasion, All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and in charge of the party’s Punjab affairs Harish Chaudhary said AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi was much worried about the pitiable condition of Punjab in relation to the menace of drug addiction.
