CHANDIGARH: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and party MLA from Fatehgarh Sahib, Kuljit Singh Nag ra, has served a le gal notice on Punjab government functionaries for non-payment of wages to workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA ) scheme for work done from April to August 2014 in 177 villages of Sirhind, Bassi Pathana and Khera of Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Nagra has served a legal notice to chief secretary of Punjab, Sarvesh Kaushal; principal secretary, rural development and panchayat department, Mandeep Singh and director C Cibin.

As per the notice, payment of total wages due is ` 2.06 crore in the villages of block Sirhind, ` 1.6 crore in villages of block Khera and ` 1.34 crore in villages of block Bassi Pathana in district Fatehgarh Sahib. “The department of rural development is also liable to pay compensation for delay in wages as per guidelines issued by the ministry of rural development,” said the legal notice.

Nagra added that the state government had already received the said payments and despite that, the delay was a cruel joke with people who were living hand-to-mouth and had been provided livelihood security through MGNREGA by the previous government at the Centre. “The state government has snatched the means of survival from families of poor workers,” added Nagra, demanding immediate release of wages along with compensation within seven days, failing which an agitation would be launched with workers of Fatehgarh Sahib district.
