JALANDHAR: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar on Sunday said mining mafia is mushrooming in the state under patronage of the leaders of the ruling SAD-BJP government.

Jakhar alleged that the state government is claiming to provide sand from the Dagana quarry in Hoshiarpur just at ` 800 per cubic feet under the new policy but the same amount was just

300 per cubic feet in past. The government is trying to befool people, he added.

During a press conference here, Jakhar further said the Punjab government was not auctioning 38 quarries in the state since it is a mere puppet in the hands of the sand mafia.

He alleged that as per a press release of the state government, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had met erstwhile union environment minister Parkash Javadekar on June 13 and claimed that environment clearance to quarries was given but nothing happened in this direction. Jakhar further said the residents who live in the border districts such as Abohar prefer to buy sand from there only rather than going to Hoshiarpur.
