Amritsar : Chief Parliamentary Secretary-cum-MLA Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah for conducting an inquiry of scam in disbursement of compensation to 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims and asked them to directly intervene in the matter of compensation provided by the Prime Minister Office on June 2006 to the victims.
A delegation of Ludhiana Sikh Migrants Welfare Board met Sidhu and handed over a memorandum to her for Modi for conducting an inquiry in the disbursement of compensation. Dr Sidhu said that approximately 22,000 affected Sikh families came to Punjab, out of which around 15,000 families came to Ludhiana. And in June 2006, Rs two lakh per family was sanctioned by Union government and a lump sum of Rs 440 crore was given to Punjab government.
She said that a three-member committee comprising of then DC, ADC and Surjit Singh Dugri was constituted and later thousands of identification cards for distribution of Rs two lakh per family were found to be bogus. She added that those who were given grants at that time only received Rs one lakh each and the remaining was taken from them as bribe.
Thousands of card holders, who did not receive any cash were shown in papers to have already received their due. She said that moreover, many families who refused to give Rs one lakh as bribe were not entertained. It is pertinent to mention here that Ludhiana Vigilance also investigated on the basis of thousands of complaints in the matter. In fact high court had also directed for action against the culprits, but to no avail. She urged the PM to issue the orders of inquiry into this case.
