CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Wednesday said the surprise check conducted by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at the police headquarters to ensure presence of the top cops was nothing but a political gimmick.
Khaira said the aim of the entire exercise was to refurbish the slackened image of Sukhbir, which had taken a hit in recent times due to non-performance of the government on all fronts.
“Sukhbir may have caught top cops, including DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, for coming late or for being absent, however, the question remains as to what action he would take against the erring officers. Earlier, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had also carried out a similar exercise, but no disciplinary action was taken against the guilty,” Khaira said.
Khaira said DGP Saini, when found absent from office, offered the excuse that he was in a meeting with the representatives of the Divya Jyoti Sansthan, Nurmahal, to carry out the high court orders. “What are offices meant for if officers have to carry out official work from their cozy homes?” Khaira wondered.
Khaira claimed that, the other day, a media house conducted a visit to the secretariat in Chandigarh, and found eight ministers, including Sukhbir, and four CPS missing.
