Chandigarh : Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Sunday accused the present regime of “defending” its what she alleged “incompetent” Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani “at the cost of human lives”.
She alleged that the two incidents of death of four infants in Ludhiana Civil Hospital and blindness of 33 persons after undergoing cataract surgeries organised by a charitable organisation at a hospital near Gurdaspur coming to fore within a fortnight tantamount to “absolute criminal neglect and state government had been protecting its Health Minister”.
In a statement issued, here, Bhatal said that preliminary enquiry into the incident of 33 people losing eyesight at eye surgery camp held at the Guru Nanak Multispecialty Hospital in Ghuman in Gurdaspur has revealed “gross negligence” by the doctor, the NGO and the medical facility.
She said that no standard norms were followed at the camp to conduct eye operations. “How was the camp for eye surgery was allowed to be held in the first place without permission from district health authorities?” she questioned.
Bhattal further said that Health Minister cannot save his skin by just stating that no camps would be allowed to be held in future without proper permission.
“He owes moral responsibility for alleged negligence of his department,” she stressed, while urging the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to sack Health Minister without any delay.
