New Delhi : The death of a 17-year-old girl, who was raped and set afire by her perpetrators in Ludhiana, rocked the Lok Sabha today with MPs coming together to demand a comprehensive debate on women's security.
The case involving the girl, who succumbed to burns in Chandigarh yesterday, was raised by Rashtriya Janata Dal member Jay Prakash Narayan, who asked why children of migrant labourers from Bihar were being sexually assaulted in other cities.
The latest case from Ludhiana brought back the memories of the Bengal gang-rape. "Bihar's daughters are being raped everywhere in India. It's a shocking trend. We are observing the International Human Rights Day and here we have another case of a daughter of a migrant being raped and then burnt to death in Ludhiana,” Narayan said.
As references to the case were made during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, several MPs demanded a debate on the issue. Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu demanded strict action against perpetrators of the crime. He said the BJP should withdraw support from the ruling Akali Dal in Punjab if the state government failed to act in the case. Bittu spoke of how the girl was abducted while she was on her way to school in Ludhiana. The girl was abducted on October 25 and raped for two days before being dropped outside her house at Prem Nagar in the Dhandari locality of Ludhiana.
"The relatives of the accused came into the girl's house after the rape, tied her to a pole and warned her against reporting the crime. Later, when the girl went to report the incident, her case was not registered in two police stations. The accused entered the girl's house from the terrace and set her ablaze," Bittu said.
