Tarn Taran : Appreciating the concern expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the drug menace in Punjab, PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa has demanded the dismissal of the Parkash Singh Badal government in the state. He also demanded a CBI probe into drug smuggling prevalent in the state.
Bajwa said this while addressing a rural gathering at Khemkaran, 45 km from here, today. Bajwa referred PM Modi’s statement that hapless mothers in Punjab wanted their sons to get out of the scourge of drugs that had been destroying their families.
He said Punjab was the only state where the names of certain ministers had surfaced in drug smuggling and one of them had to resign. However, no action had been taken against others. It was only after the formation of the new government at the Centre that the state BJP had started taking up the issue.
He referred the PM Modi’s speech linking drug money to terrorism. What was happening in Punjab was a direct threat to the national security, Bajwa said. The Enforcement Directorate was ready for the investigation, but it was awaiting a political nod as the list of persons to be questioned included the name of a minister, he added.
Bajwa said Modi had only corroborated what Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had said during his Punjab visit before the elections. At that time, CM Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had dubbed it as a political statement bereft of facts. “What is the Badals’ stand on the PM’s statement now? Will they still dub it as an overstatement with political overtones?” he said.
