JALANDHAR: In a development that may further strain Akali-BJP relations, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) vice-president and noted Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans has resigned from the primary membership of the party. He is likely to join the saffron party in the near future.
A prominent face of the party from the Valmiki community that holds sway in many constituencies of the state, especially in the Doaba region, Hans was not feeling “happy” in the SAD after he was denied the Lok Sabha ticket from Jalandhar earlier this year. The party had picked chief parliamentary secretary and Adampur MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu, who went on to lose to Chaudhary Santokh Singh of the Congress.
SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema and district party president Charanjit Channi refused to comment on the issue. Sources said the party was yet to discuss the matter.
