Patiala : Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said here on Thursday that Punjab Assembly winter session was a wasteful exercise as ruling combine did not allow opposition to raise major issues of common interest and welfare.
Addressing media persons here, she asked what was the need of holding such an ornamental session in which the opposition was not given any proper opportunity to raise important issues concerning the people of the state? She said that there are number of issues like virtual collapse of state health services, urea shortage, drug problem, non-payment of dues to labourers engaged in ferrying paddy crop.
Bhattal said that the Parkash Singh Badal headed government has tendency to run assembly sessions in autocratic manner not giving opportunity to opposition party (Congress) to bring up issues needing attention of the state Vidhan Sabha.
She said that if the assembly session is not serving any purpose in terms of discussion on pertinent issues added that it is a financial burden on the state exchequer especially owing to the fact that financial condition of state is fragile. She said that financial condition of state is so weak that even labourers involved in lifting of paddy crop had not been paid their dues by the state government.
The senior Congress leader also stated that merely passing of resolution to handover Chandigarh to Punjab is meaningless unless this issue is taken up vociferously by the Badal government with the Central government. She said that the Badal government should tone up state administration adding that people of state are sick of present regime owing to its administrative loath and inertia.
On making Raja Warring president of IYC Bhattal thanked Rahul Gandhi for giving such a honor to Punjab and said that she is sure Warring put in best efforts for uplift of Congress specially in Punjab.
