CHANDIGARH: The Congress on Thursday appointed firsttime Punjab MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring (37) as the president of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC). Hailing from Muktsar, the stronghold of the ruling Badals, Warring emerged as the big slayer as a first-time legislator after defeating fourtime MLA Manpreet Badal from Gidderbaha.
He was among the four to five people interviewed by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi recently, including leaders from Karnataka, Telengana and West Bengal. His elevation was announced by Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi on Thursday.
Punjab has bagged the top YC post 14 years after former Union minister Manish Tewari was elected IYC chief in 1998. The MLA replaces Maharashtra MP Rajiv Satav, whose two-year tenure ended several months ago. Amrinder who uses the surname Warring after his village’s name, was a protege of former MP Jagmeet Brar, who made him a block president and later the district president of the Punjab Youth Congress. He was appointed spokesman of the IYC from 2005-08, a post he resigned to contest elections to the Punjab Youth Congress. He stood second to Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu and was made vice-president.
Describing his appointment as a big day for a common man, Warring said he had risen in the Congress ranks without any political background. “I started as a block president. And my aim as the Youth Congress chief will be to strengthen the party right from the booth level,” he said.
With good oratorical skills, he has been taking the SAD-BJP government in Punjab head on, both inside and outside the assembly.
