Muktsar : With about a fortnight left for the annual Maghi Mela here, various political parties are preparing to utilise the event to raise important issues, especially in view of the coming local bodies elections.

The Congress may invite a national-level leader from Delhi. At a meeting in Chandigarh recently, some members suggested that AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi be invited. This was opposed by certain leaders because of security reasons. The Congress has decided to shift its venue for the political conference near Gurdwara Tarn Taran Sahib on the Bathinda Road.

The People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) will hold its political conference near the district Police Lines on its own without the support of Sanjha Morcha constituents, including the SAD (Barnala), the CPI and the CPI (M).

Rakesh Dhingra, BJP’s district president, said he had been invited by SAD’s district president Dyal Singh Kolianwali to discuss arrangements for the SAD-BJP conference. Congress district president Gurmeet Singh Khuddian said PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa would hold a meeting on January 5 to discuss arrangements for the Maghi Mela conference. He said the party might invite Rahul Gandhi and Raj Babbar.
