Chandigarh : The People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief, Manpreet Singh Badal, today called upon the political class to make a “solemn commitment” not to lure voters with narcotics during elections, if it was sincere in eradicating the drug menace.
In a statement, Manpreet said without any such commitment, campaigns would be a sham. He said even for taking people to rallies, political parties usually offered liquor to the people. He alleged that people at the SAD’s anti-drug rally were seen carrying narcotics and drinking alcohol.
He said realising the gravity of the issue, the Akali Dal had raised the drug issue in its manifesto for the 2007 Assembly elections. It had promised an awareness drive against drugs. However, once in power, this poll promise was abandoned. It was the same story during the 2011 SGPC elections. “The Akali Dal leadership, it seems, has a selective memory,” Manpreet said. He questioned the Deputy Chief Minister’s claim that there was a sinister design to portray Punjabis as drug addicts.” They must go back to their 2007 manifesto,” he said.
