CHANDIGARH: Several Congress leaders on Tuesday took a dig at BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh for “trying to defend the indefensible” and giving a “lame” reason over his party cancelling the January 22 Amritsar rally. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has cited the February 7 Delhi polls as the reason.

“It is a public knowledge that the BJP ran away after Capt Amarinder Singh announced to hold a parallel rally the same day at Amritsar,” read a statement signed and issued here by rally coordinator Rana Gurjit Singh and MLAs OP Soni, Raj Kumar Verka , Sukhbinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.

About Chugh saying that Delhi assembly polls would give the “perfect reply” to Amarinder, they said, “Capt does not need to prove his popularity in New Delhi as he has already proved it in Amritsar during the general elections… If you still have any doubts, you better ask your finance minister Arun Jaitely (who had lost to Amarinder).”

“It was public knowledge that the Delhi elections had to be concluded before February 15, the deadline for constituting the new assembly,” they added, saying that they did not expect a “junior” leader such as Chugh to be in the know of such things “since the decision to cancel the rally must of Amit Shah himself ”.
