KOLKATA: Notwithstanding the fact that it apparently indicts late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for India’s military defeat in the 1962 war with China, Congress MP Capt Amarinder Singh has called for the release of the Henderson-Brooks report.

“The report should have been out a long time ago. When reports on Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka or the 1965 war are out, then why are we sitting on (the) 1962 (report)?” Amarinder, a former army captain, told IANS.

“If you want to protect some politicians or army generals, then it is unfortunate. One learns from experiences and it should be out so that the people may know what actually happened,” he said during the Kolkata launch of his latest book ‘Honour and Fidelity: India’s Military Contribution to the Great War 1914-1918’.

The former Punjab chief minister said there was a consensus among political parties to oppose the declassification of the report that has remained a state secret for the past 50 years.

“There is a consensus among political parties of opposing its release. I have written on the 1962 war and I do not think there is anything that needs to be covered up. If somebody has made a mistake, it should be out for the public to know,” he said.
