AMRITSAR: Taking on the BJP and its national chief Amit Shah, Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday accused the saffron party of “double standards” on the drugs issue.
Speaking at the Lalkar rally here, Amarinder said that on the one hand, Shah talked about fighting against drugs, while on the other, his party is fighting the Delhi assembly polls with the SAD. “I will support anyone who is sincere in fighting against drugs but doesn’t indulge in drama. If Shah wants to fight against the problem, he is welcome, but he must first part company with the Akalis,” he added.
Amarinder also criticised the BJP for the sudden transfer of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer Niranjan Singh from Jalandhar to Kolkata at a time when the investigation into the drug racket involving certain Akali leaders was nearing completion.
“The excuse given by the NDA government is that Singh was transferred to handle a more important case (Saradha chit fund scam). Is this chit fund scam more important than drugs which are killing our youth,” he asked. He ridiculed the BJP for calling off its anti-drug rally. He pointed out that the Delhi polls was a lame excuse for cancelling the rally as Shah was in Bihar just a few days ago. He vowed to hold a Congress rally on the very day Shah would hold his party’s rally against drugs in Punjab. He slammed the Akalis for blaming the BSF for the smuggling of heroin from across the border. He questioned the state government on the manufacture of synthetic drugs within the state and pointed out that people were aware of those who were involved in the manufacturing and selling of such drugs. In this context, he took the names of revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Sarwan Singh Phillaur and Avinash Chander.
Amarinder also lambasted CM Badal for “wasting” public funds on sangat darshan. He alleged that the Badals had done nothing but to loot Punjab, construct hotels and promote their self-interests. He also slammed the CM for “not opposing” the new land acquisition policy, which would be against the interests of farmers.
