Patiala: Senior Congress leader and former chief minister of Punjab Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has criticised the SAD-BJP government for bringing Punjab on the verge of bankruptcy by fiscal mismanagement.

Bhattal, who was on a private visit here on Thursday, talked to a select group of newsmen. She said the state government barely survived financially when the Centre gave a loan of Rs 195 crore to avoid being declared defaulter by the Reserve Bank of India. Had it not got the loan, all payments from the RBI would have stopped to the state. The amount helped Punjab against defaulting on overdraft.

Such is the financial emergency that 7,000 computer teachers working in various schools have not been paid salaries since September, 2014.

They have threatened to launch an agitation if their salaries are not paid in the next few days.

Besides, workers working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in Bathinda have not been paid dues for several months now.
