THE MP WHOSE ELECTIONS WERE CHALLENGED BELONG TO THE SHIROMANI AKALI DAL AND THE BJP
CHANDIGARH: Acting chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court, SJ Vazifdar has turned down the suggestion of an HC judge who had recommended that petitions challenging election of six MPs in Punjab be referred to one judge.
On January 29, justice Ajay Tewari had referred a petition challenging election of Prem Singh Chandumajra, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Lok Sabha MP from Anandpur Sahib, to the acting chief justice recommending that the six petitions be heard by a single judge since there were almost similar grounds of appeal in all the pleas. It is learnt justice Vazifdar has turned down the suggestion and stated that cases be heard by the respective benches that were already dealing with them.
The MPs whose elections were challenged following the 2014 polls are Vinod Khanna (Gurdaspur) and Vijay Sampla (Hoshiarpur) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and four SAD MPs, Prem Singh Chandumajra (Anandpur Sahib), Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Bathinda), Ranjit Singh Brahmpura (Khadoor Sahib) and Sher Singh Ghubaya (Ferozepur).
The challenge is on the grounds that they committed corrupt practices and released advertisements by using religious symbols and places to seek votes in the name of religion.
