Chandigarh: Congress Party’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday said that he would ensure that international flights continue to ply from Amritsar international airport.
Reacting to reports in a section of media that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had decided to withdraw all international flights from Amritsar airport and divert these to Chandigarh airport, Amarinder said that he would take up the matter with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and ensure it does not happen. In a statement here, he said that Amritsar was religiously, culturally and historically an important place where people from all over the world come and he was also making efforts to get more international flights to fly from here.
Amritsar MP also noted that withdrawing international flights from here would cause harassment and extra costs to the working class people who are employed in the Middle East and in other countries and fly from here only. The former chief minister maintained that Amritsar Airport caters to the people of entire Doaba and Majha regions besides a large part of the Malwa region, and stressed that the number of international flights needs to be increased rather than decreased.
