Chandigarh : The People’s Party of Punjab chief, Manpreet Singh Badal, today said his party had reached an understanding with the Congress for the municipal elections.

Speaking to The Tribune, he said they had entered a seat pact with the Congress in almost all districts. “It is not an alliance between the PPP and the Congress, but merely adjustment of seats as was done earlier during the zila parishad elections.

“The PPP will not put up candidates in wards where the Congress fields its candidates,” he explained.

“We have finalised this arrangement after several meetings at the local level. Earlier, we had done the same for the zila parishad elections and the outcome was encouraging,” Manpreet said. He said there could be a friendly contest between the PPP and the Congress on some seats. “Municipal elections by and large revolve around local issues, such as water availability and sanitation. I will campaign hard for the elections,” he said.

Asked if he would tie up with the Left parties too, Manpreet Badal said his party would have no formal arrangement with the Left but would not put up candidates in wards where their candidate were in the fray. “It is PPP’s unilateral decision not to field candidates against nominees of Left parties,” he said. During the Lok Sabha elections, the Left parties had supported Manpreet in Bathinda.
