Tarn Taran : Four persons were injured in a violent clash between Akali and BJP workers outside the SDM’s office here this morning where they had gone to sort out issues related to delimitation of wards.
Former councillor Raja Joshi, who is brother of Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi, was among those attacked. Gunshots were heard being fired into the air.
The trouble began when a SAD delegation led by Bhupinder Singh Khera came out of the SDM’s office after raising objections over the delimitation of certain wards.
The SAD and the BJP workers entered into an altercation even as a BJP delegation led by Raja Joshi and Rajkumar Aggarwal went inside to meet SDM Anupreet Kaur Dhillon.
The Akali workers reportedly manhandled a relative of former Akali minister Hira Singh Gabria, who recently joined the BJP.
Thereafter, they attacked Raja Joshi and other BJP workers too. Raja’s pistol was allegedly snatched.
The warring groups pelted each other with bricks and stones. A few gunshots were fired too. Bullet marks could be seen on the walls of the SDM office. Aggarwal demanded strict action against the Akali workers.
Sukhwinder Singh, DSP, claimed that nobody had received gunshot injuries.
BJP worker Girish Aggarwal, who has been hospitalised, alleged that he was run over by a motorcycle, besides being beaten up with baseball bats.
The injured Akali workers were identified as Baljit Singh Gill, Inderjit Singh and Gurbaj Singh.
Gill, a former SAD councillor, alleged that the BJP workers opened fire at him and that he had a narrow escape. He accused the BJP workers of thrashing him with baseball bats.
After the incident, angry BJP workers staged a dharna outside the SDM’s office while Akali workers held a protest at Chowk Bauhri.
Both sought action against each other. The situation in the town was tense till the filing of the report.
