Chandigarh : Condemning the “unabashed goondaism unleashed by the Akalis”, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa today demanded that the process for the nagar council elections be restarted in Guruharsahai by declaring the present nominations void.

In a statement, Bajwa took note of the new trend adopted by the Akalis of “not allowing the Congress candidates to file their nominations”. “The Akalis did not vacate the office of the returning officer, thus denying the Congress candidates a chance to file their nominations.

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Congress MLA from Guruharsahai who had led the contingent of his party candidates, was allegedly not allowed to enter the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office complex to file nominations by the police on the pretext that the place was jam-packed.

Bajwa claimed that Sodhi had informed the police about their programme well in advance.

He called upon the State Election Commission to cancel the election process and announce a new schedule while making sure that such incidents were not repeated. Describing it as “murder of democracy”, he said such tactics would not be tolerated by the Congress.
