CHANDIGARH: Amid raging infighting in the Punjab Congress, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday met former chief minister and deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Captain Amarinder Singh.

Rahul had met state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa after his meetings with state MLAs, a majority of who chorused for leadership change accusing Bajwa of not being a team leader and following a “divisive agenda”.

However, Bajwa had claimed to have got Rahul’s backing after his meeting and announced that the Congress vice-president would kickstart a campaign against the “anti-farmer” policies of the Narendra Modi government from Punjab in March.

Rahul was expected to meet Amarinder after the Delhi elections. Coming after a wipeout of the Congress in Delhi, the meeting was dominated by national issues besides the leadership crisis in Punjab. Though Amarinder did not respond to calls, reliable sources said that he had once again apprised Rahul of Bajwa’s “incapability” to lead the party to victory in the 2017 Punjab polls and asked that a new president of the state unit be appointed at the earliest to arrest the party’s “falling graph”.
