JALANDHAR: Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh on Saturday alleged that Akali leaders were threatening Congress candidates to withdraw their nominations.
He said the matter was brought to the notice of the police, but no action had been taken under political pressure from the ruling party. He claimed that on Friday former Kapurthala municipal council president Paramjit Singh accompanied by about 15-20 people threatened Congress candidate from ward 8 Anita Rai and pressured her husband Ranjeet Rai to withdrew her nomination. He said when Rai refused this, Makkar threatened him by saying that he (Rai) must realise that he was running a hospital. “This is a clear case of threat to Rai pressuring him to withdraw his wife from the contest,” alleged Rana.
The Kapurthala MLA further said this was unacceptable. He said the Akalis should have courage and confidence to face the electorate and they must not use threats.
