PARTY CANDIDATES COULDN’T FILE PAPERS, SAYS STATE CONG CHIEF, WANTS POLL PROCESS RESTARTED IN FEROZEPUR TOWN

CHANDIGARH: Condemning the “goondaism” unleashed by the Akalis, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa has asked for restarting the nagar council election process at Guru Har Sahai in Ferozepur district.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, he demanded that the present nominations be declared void, since the Akalis had not allowed the Congress members to file nominations.

“They occupied the office of the returning officer earlier in the day to not let us in to file the papers. Legislator Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi was leading the Congress contingent and the police stopped him outside on the pretext that the subdivisional magistrate’s office was packed,” said Bajwa.

He claimed the Sodhi had informed the police well in advance about the party’s programme. He asked the state election commission to cancel the election process in the Ferozepur town and declare a fresh nomination schedule that avoided a repeat of this situation.

“The ruling party has murdered democracy in Guru Har Sahai. We’ll not let the tactic succeed,” said the Punjab Congress president.
