Chandigarh : Accusing the Akalis of spreading terror in the state, Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha and Amritsar Member of Parliament Capt Amarinder Singh today warned the police not to act in a biased manner during the municipal elections.

He was referring to the murder of Gurvinder Singh Goldy in Rampura Phul area of Bathinda district.

He alleged that a group of Akali leaders and workers had killed Goldy. But the police had booked local Congress leaders in connection with the murder.

In a statement today, Amarinder Singh said: “I warn all ultra-loyalist police and civil officials. They must know that come 2017, they will have to account for their acts of omission and commission.” He demanded the immediate release of the Congress workers of Mehraj village in Rampura Phul who, he said, had been falsely implicated in the murder case.

Amarinder Singh maintained that instead of going after the real culprits, seven Congress candidates had been booked for a crime they had not committed.

“The Akalis have let loose a reign of terror through their goons. They are misusing the police to book Congress leaders for crimes committed by the Akalis themselves,” he alleged.

Bajwa seeks action

Chandigarh: Alleging that the life of Congress workers in the state was under threat, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa today demanded a new election schedule for Guruharsahai as well as protection for MLA Rana Gurmit Sodhi. He said the latter was being targeted by the Akalis.

He also demanded that Gurdev Singh Mann, Gursewak Singh Mann and Rohit Vohra be arrested. He said they were roaming free despite non-bailable warrants against them in an attempt to murder case.

“The Congress will move the appropriate authority if the government and the administration do not take action against these goons. Also, there will be protests on the streets of Punjab,” Bajwa warned.

He called upon the people to give a crushing defeat to the SAD-BJP alliance, claiming that the Congress was bound to benefit from the apparent fissures between the allies.

He said that property tax was “irrational” and an unnecessary burden on the people. Cities and towns had potholed roads and at several places sewage flowed onto the streets.
