FEROZEPUR: In a major blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), the Congress secured victory in the election of ward 14 of Ferozepur municipal council held here on Sunday.
Amid tight security, the entire area adjoining the Government Primary School in ward number 14 was cordoned off to ensure peaceful election, which could not be held on February 25, following discrepancies in the electoral rolls.
It may be mentioned here that a high drama prevailed in the local ward number 14, on February 25, when majority of voters did not find their names in the electoral list available with the polling staff. After a agitation by local inhabitants, Sundeep Singh Gra, sub-divisional magistrate-cum- returning officer, recommended cancellation of the poll while, later on, the state election commission ordered to hold the same on Sunday.
Today, as many as six people were in the fray including each one from the Congress as well as BJP besides four Independents.
A total of 73.54% voters exercised their right to franchise and out of the 2,457 polled votes, Babbu of the Congress secured victory by getting 1,244 votes while Jagga of the BJP trailed by securing 1,167 votes and the four Independents could not succeed to get even fifty votes in total. In the 31 wards at Ferozepur MC, BJP have secured 19 seats, SAD 8 and three by the Congress. There are three Independents.
No untoward incident was reported on Sunday as strong measures had been taken to deal with any eventuality, revealed Lakhbir Singh, SP (headquarters), Ferozepur.
