CHANDIGARH: Deputy leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday condemned the gangrape of a girl in Ludhiana on Saturday, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.

He expressed support to the victim and the family in their fight for justice and hoped that they would overcome the shock with courage. “My party and I stand by you in this hour of tragedy that has been brought on you for no fault of yours,” he assured the family, adding, “Your shock and grief is as much as ours and we will ensure that you get justice and the culprits are brought to book soon.”

Amarinder also questioned the alleged silence of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who heads the home department, even two days after the incident.

The former chief minister said he had been consistently reminding the state government of the deteriorating lawand-order situation. “The incident is a law-and-order failure and the entire onus is on the government which has failed to ensure safety of women,” he asserted.

Amarinder demanded that the government must arrest the culprits immediately.

“The alarming regularity with which such incidents are taking place across the state is worrying; more worrying is the government’s criminal indifference towards such a situation,” he observed.
