Chandigarh : Congress general secretary and Punjab affairs in charge Shakeel Ahmed today scotched speculation over any change in the state Congress leadership.
“Partap Singh Bajwa is the party’s Punjab unit president. No one is replacing him and the party backs him fully,” Ahmed told The Tribune.
He also rubbished reports that the AICC had chosen veteran Congress leader and former state minister Lal Singh as Bajwa’s successor. “There is absolutely no truth in such reports. The top leadership has not finalised anything of this sort so far,” Ahmed said.
Asked what the Congress was doing to revive itself in the state and what its plans were to contain the ongoing tussle between two major warring groups — one led by Bajwa and another by former CM Capt Amarinder Singh — Ahmed said the party was “seized of the matter”.
“The party leadership is aware of all developments taking place in Punjab. Our priority is to fight for people’s rights. Like other states, we will hold protests in Punjab too against the anti-farmer land Bill,” he said. Ahmed said on
the lines of AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s national-level dialogue session, a conference for the Punjab party leaders would be held in Chandigarh from March 12-17. He said
MLAs and former state presidents would participate in the brain-storming exercise for revival of the party in the state.
“After this session, four similar sessions (one each in Majha and Doaba regions and two in Malwa region) would be held to gather grassroots level feedback. We will also chalk out a strategy to fight the upcoming Dhuri bye-election,” Ahmed added.
