Chandigarh : The main Opposition Congress began the proceedings of the Budget session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha with a boycott and walk-out here on Thursday afternoon.
No sooner the Punjab Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, flanked by Assembly Speaker Dr Charanjit Singh Atwal arrived in the House and took their seats at 1.58 pm, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar stood and started speaking.
Raising the infamous synthetic drugs scam, Jakhar told the Governor and Speaker that the Opposition had moved a no confidence motion against the state government in the winter session of the Assembly over drugs and other issues. “The Minister concerned, whose name had figured in the scam had neither resigned nor he had been dismissed,” he resented, while alleging that the recent disclosures in the chargesheet filed in the case had “corroborated the allegations against the
Minister” but he continues to occupy his chair. “To lodge our protest over the issue, we are boycotting the Governor’s address,” he announced.
Soon after, around 37 Congress MLAs, led by CLP leader, stood from their seats and started shouting slogans against the government and walked out of the House.
Later speaking to Daily Post, Jakhar said they will continue with their protest on Friday as well when the House is scheduled to take up obituary references. “We will attend the House during obituary references to pay our tributes to the departed souls but later we will raise our voice against the government over the drugs issue and also other burning issues, including Land Acquisition Bill,” he revealed.
The CLP leader disclosed that the Congress will also move breach of privilege motion against the Minister concerned on Monday and will meet the Assembly Speaker to seek requisite time to raise drugs, land bill and several other issues. “We will continue with our protest to seek dismissal of the Minister concerned,” Jakhar added.
