CHANDIGARH: Congress leader Inderjit Singh Zira, who on March 20 allegedly tried to breach the security of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, made a show of his surrendering on Friday here.
In the morning, he took discharge from the PGI (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) but didn’t move to the Sector 3 police station for the formalities of surrender until Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa had arrived to accompany him.
At the police station, Zira posed for photographs with Bajwa first and then the supporters he had brought along, one of whom said the pictures would go up on the social media “to let the people of Punjab know that the leader had gone to jail for opposing the land acquisition bill”.
Even the police officials came out to enjoy the drama. Zira had three lawyers in tow, and in the afternoon, he was produced in the court, from where he was sent to the Burail jail.
An attempt-to-murder case is lodged against his driver, personal assistant and him since they allegedly clashed with the police commandos protecting the chief minister’s motorcade after being denied permission to hold a protest outside assembly against the land acquisition bill.
On the day it happened, he had reported to Government Multispecialty Hospital (GMSH) here with chest pain. On the day of discharge on Monday, however, he was referred to the PGI, and the police couldn’t arrest him.
His driver, Daljeet Singh, and personal assistant, Akashdeep Singh, are under arrest already.
