Talwandi Sabo : Giving a definite shape to the Congress outpourings against the Land Acquisition Bill, president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Partap Singh Bajwa today announced a “jail bharo andolan” from May 1 onwards. The protest would continue till the BJP government withdrew the Bill in its current form.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party meeting in connection with the conference at the forthcoming Baisakhi celebrations here, Bajwa said, “I will be the first one in the party to court arrest in front of the residence of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The party has a long list of volunteers who will continue to court arrest till the Centre withdrew the Bill.”
“The Punjab unit will carry forward the flame of farmers’ movement,” he said. The Punjab unit is expected to send more than 20,000 workers for the party rally to be held in support of farmers at New Delhi on April 19.
“We will not allow the FCI to stop grain procurement from Punjab farmers. The BJP has not honoured its commitment of giving revised MSP to farmers. It continues to fail in taking into account the actual input costs of farmers. The Act got passed by our party provided for seeking consent of at least 80 per cent farmers before acquiring their land. The BJP government has sidelined that. The Centre is now playing in the hands of the rich and proposes to divest the poor of its land,” he said.
