Abohar : State Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa and Congress Legislature Party Leader Sunil Jakhar have been asked to attend a meeting at the office of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) in New Delhi tomorrow. Sources said the AICC had formed a central action committee to organise a kisan rally on April 19 to protest against the land acquisition Act and the delay in payment of compensation to farmers.

The meeting on the issue will be conducted by AICC treasurer Moti Lal Vohra, AK Antony and Janardan Dwivedi. Confirming the development, Jakhar said the BJP government was adamant on ruining the agricultural economy to help the corporate sector which heavily funded the BJP election campaign. He said the Congress would protest against the government.

He said farmers were feeling cheated for the past one year as the NDA government had not set a remunerative price for farm produce. Jakhar also said central funds for most of the welfare schemes had not been disbursed. He said that area under irrigated agricultural land had already been drastically reduced in the state, but neither the state government nor the Centre had tried to address the grievances of the farming community.

Jakhar said even in the election campaign in Dhuri, the Chief Minister was trying to paint a rosy picture of the economy even though the fiscal condition of the state was poor.
