Meemsa (Dhuri) : Former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh finally arrived in the town to campaign for party candidate Simar Pratap Singh Barnala.
Captain got a warm welcome at Meemsa village, where he addressed a rally. The Congress leader’s cavalcade comprised a large number of vehicles. Numerous party workers stood in groups en route Amarinder’s way to the rally venue.
Talking to the media, he said the Congress was not divided and there was no confusion so far as the role of senior leaders was concerned. Captain said nearly 30 MLAs and several party office-bearers had arrived in the town to canvass during the last leg of campaigning.
“When Simar’s name is cleared by party president Sonia Gandhi, there is no question of not participating in the campaign,” he said.
The MLAs present on the occasion included Kewal Singh Dhillon, Mohammad Sadique, Harchand Kaur Ghanauri, Amrik Singh Dhilon, Brahm Mohindra, Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Rana Gurjit Singh, Hardyal Kamboj, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Balbir Singh Sidhu and Sham Sunder Arora.
Amarinder took on Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal alleging “he never speaks the truth”. The Akali Dal first supported the BJP on amendments to the land acquisition Bill and now they were crying hoarse. The SAD was also fooling people by expressing its opposition to sharing of river waters, he alleged.
Captain said: “AAP is only a phenomenon and not a political party. Since the phenomenon has now faded, our voters will return. At the same time, the Akali vote is divided between the SAD (A) and Independent candidate Vikram Dhanuala.
“People are fed up with the false promises made by the SAD. The party’s desperation was evident with the spending of Rs 70 crore during the CM’s Sangat Drashan programmes just before the announcement of the elections,” he alleged.
Simar and his grandmother Surjit Kaur Barnala also spoke on the occasion.
