Amritsar: Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar on Sunday slammed the Punjab government for not releasing compensation to the state farmers affected by unseasonal rain. “The cultivation in 3-lakh hectares was damaged in Punjab and government has not released compensation to farmers till date,” he expressed these views in a media briefing at Amritsar on Sunday.

“Under changed norms, the compensation of Rs 358.68 crore was proposed for farmers and Central government had earmarked Rs 293 crore for relief and Punjab government has its own share, SAD-BJP alliance is having proper amount for compensation but I am surprised that why government is not releasing the amount,” said Jakhar.

He said, “The state government is running from its responsibility and it is very serious issue.”

While mentioning about the unseasonal rainfall in September 2014, Jakhar claimed, “The compensation of Rs 297 crore was made for farmers in September last year and Union government has allocated an amount of Rs 203 crore under state disaster response management and state government had its own share in the relief amount, but Punjab government has not released that compensation till date.”

He said, “The SAD-BJP alliance is playing with the emotions of farmers and it is very unfortunate. The increase of compensation per hectare was not done by NDA government but it was done on the recommendation of finance commission established by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.”

Jakhar also said, “All is not well among SAD-BJP alliance as BJP wants to establish itself as leading party in state, so the party is working on different note.”

He also criticised the Punjab government for lack of cleanliness in Amritsar.
