DERA BABA NANAK: The farmers of villages in this border area of Dera Baba Nanak have threatened to organise protests if their demand of ` 25,000 per acre compensation for crop damages due to rain and hail is not met.
The demand was raised by them before Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar, who undertook a tour on Sunday to several villages in Dera Baba Nanak and Qadian assembly segments.
Talking to the media during the tour, Jakhar said the SAD-BJP was “deaf and dumb”.
Till date, the state government had neither discussed the crop damage issue with the central government nor had assured farmers of aid from the state exchequer, he added.
According to rough estimates drawn up by the CLP leader, an amount of ` 358 crore would be required for paying compensations to the farmers, of which ` 293 crore will come from the central government.
