LUDHIANA: Independent legislators Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains said they can join hands with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against the sand mafia in the state. The Bains brothers, however, said they won’t join AAP.

They also praised AAP for its “good” works and said there was nothing wrong if they drew inspiration from it (AAP).

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, the Bains brothers accused the police of playing into the hands of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Badal. They said the cops unleashed terror on roads when they were going to form a human chain in Ludhiana on Saturday evening. They said their phones were also being tapped. “We would start a satyagraha from April 20 against the sand mafia and those patronising such illegal activities,” they said.

Demanding strict action against the police officials who “roughed up” their supporters on Saturday, the Bains brothers said: “We don’t have faith in the police and have already written to the authorities concerned to take our security back.”

The Bains brothers and their supporters were taken into custody on Saturday evening when they were trying to form a human chain against the sand mafia.

“We will continue our agitation against the sand mafia. We are not afraid of being arrested. The government and sand mafia are threatening us, but we won’t budge,” said Simarjit.

NOT THE WAY TO PROTEST, SAYS AAP LEADER

AAP’s Ludhiana district convener Ahbaab Singh Grewal on Sunday lashed out at the Bains brothers for blocking traffic at Bharat Nagar Chowk. “They appreciated AAP and Arvind Kejriwal, but if they mean what they say, they should follow the party’s way of protesting. We hold regular protests but make sure that the common man does not suffer.”
