Firing at private college, Capt Amarinder condemns incident

Amritsar: Some unidentified assailants equipped with arms opened fire on VMS College, a private institute located at Amritsar Road on Friday. After the incident, panic spread across the institution and nearby, sources said, accused persons who came on car fired 20 rounds.
No casualty was reported but bullet hit college bus and a SUV standing outside the college premises. According to police, the incident was result of student politics in the college. The institute is promoted by Vishwa Mittar Sekhri Charitable Society of Batala and it is related to local Congress MLA, Ashwani Sekhri.
Sources said, “The students of the college have elected their president unanimously but one group of students was not in its favour”.
They said, “While firing, accused persons were saying that they will not accept the elected president even they were against such elections”. After getting the information about the incident, Superintendent of Police, Detective, Amrik Singh Power along with large number of cops reached the spot. Soon Inspector General, border range, Ishwar Chander Sharma has also visited the spot.
8 hurt in firing during clash in Kapurthala
Kapurthala: Eight persons, including a woman, were injured in firing after a clash broke out between two groups over possession of land at Shahwala village, police said. During the clash, one group fired gunshots injuring eight persons. Palo, one of those injured seriously, has been referred to a private hospital at Jalandhar and her condition is stated to be critical, police said. The clash between two groups broke out over possession of six marlas (approximately 1,632 sq ft) of the village land, police said. The remaining injured persons have been admitted to a hospital at Sultanpur Lodhi and are stated to be of danger, police said. A case has been registered under various Sections of the IPC, police said.
Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh condemned the incident of indiscriminate firing at a college bus in Batala. In a statement issued here, Capt Amarinder expressed grave concern over such incidents which have led to a sense of fear and insecurity among people. He warned that the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal against the laxity asking him to wake up from his slumber and take these incidents seriously lest the situation gets out of control. “Better nip the evil in the bud”, he asked Badal while adding, if he did not have the will to act, he should better quit. Capt Amarinder Singh pointed out this was second such incident in the area in less than a week. “Moreover, this being the border belt, extra care must be taken and there must not be any laxity in dealing with such incidents”.
