PHAGWARA: Leaderof Opposition Sunil Jakhar on Sunday said the Congress will put up united fight in next assembly polls in 2017 and will measure up to public expectations.
Jakhar who was here to attend the bhog ceremony of mother-inlaw of MLA Kapurthala Rana Gurjit said the government has failed to fulfil its promises. He said the Congress leaders will resolve their difference of opinion on certain issues and put up an “united fight” in the next assembly polls.
“During time of UPA government Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal used to demand Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 compensation for farmers for the loss, he was now asking from NDA government just `10,000 compensation and `100 bonus for per quintal wheat,” Jakhar said.
He alleged that the administrative set-up had totally collapsed as far as procurement of wheat was concerned and farmers were cooling their heels in state ‘mandis’ in long wait of purchase of their produce but it was not being procured by anybody that forced them to sell wheat at far less price than the Maximum Selling Price (MSP).
Accusing Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal of letting go farmers issues, Jakhar alleged that he was feeling the heat of drug racket involving many Akalis, the subsequent probe by Enforcement Directorate and thus was reluctant to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding farmers issues. He said the CM owed an explanation to Punjabis as to why was he turning a blind eye to interests of Punjab and ditching farmers.
