Abohar : Congress Legislature Party Leader Sunil Jakhar and Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu on Sunday warned the state government against committing “excesses” on legislators Balwinder Singh Bains and his brother Simranjit Singh Bains for raising voice against the sand mafia.

They said the Bains brothers had “exposed” the SAD-BJP government on sand mafia issues, which had put the alliance leaders in the dock. “Keeping them in jail by slapping more and more cases and trying to raise the gravity of crime amounts to the murder of democracy. The designs of the ruling alliance also defeat the purpose of fundamental rights of people enshrined in the Constitution,” they said.

Jakhar said he had raised the issue of unchecked and widespread sand mining in the constituency (Jalalabad) which had twice elected Sukhbir Singh Badal but despite assurances, no step has been taken to check the menace.

For the past eight years, the government had given “a free hand” to the gravel sand and stone metal mafia, he alleged. The politically and officially backed mafia was indulging in open “loot”, they alleged.

Jakhar and Bittu said political lines and ideologies might differ but the Congress would stand by each person who fought for the people’s cause. If the government kept on unleashing a reign of terror on the Bains brothers, the Congress would have to hold a strong protest, they warned.
